  • World Mosquito Day: Your Travel Health Guide to Mosquito-Borne Diseases

Today, 20th August, is World Mosquito Day. Most of us have had a mosquito bite or two, itchy, annoying but usually harmless in the UK. However, mosquitoes are far more than a nuisance. Around the world, they are responsible for spreading serious and sometimes fatal diseases. While the UK doesn’t carry a significant risk for most mosquito-borne illnesses, travelling abroad, especially to tropical or subtropical regions, can put you at risk. Knowing what diseases to look out for, how to protect yourself, and what to do if you fall ill can make all the difference to your health and safety when travelling.

    Mosquito-Borne Illnesses to Know About

    Malaria

Malaria is a serious mosquito-borne disease that can be fatal if left untreated. It is most common in tropical regions such as parts of Africa, Asia, Central and South America, the Pacific Islands, and some areas of the Middle East.
Symptoms may include high fever, fatigue, muscle pain, jaundice, and difficulty breathing. Malaria is a medical emergency and requires urgent treatment.

    Chikungunya

Chikungunya is less well-known mosquito-borne illness, but around 75% of the world’s population live in areas where it’s a risk. It can cause severe joint pain, fever, nausea, and, in some cases, long-term complications. Up to 43% of people who catch chikungunya may experience chronic effects.

Recent outbreaks have occurred closer to the UK, including in France, highlighting the importance of prevention.

    Japanese Encephalitis

While rare, Japanese Encephalitis can be life-threatening. It is most common in parts of India, China, Japan, South Korea, Indonesia, and Southeast Asia.
Initial symptoms can be mild, but if the infection spreads to the brain, it can cause paralysis, seizures, or even death. Up to 1 in 3 people who develop severe symptoms may die as a result of the infection. Hospital treatment is essential for serious cases.
