What is Typhoid Fever?
Typhoid fever is caused by the Salmonella Typhi bacteria, which can infect the body through contaminated food or water. It is highly contagious, and people can contract it if they consume food or drink that has been tainted with infected urine or faeces. This infection is common in areas with poor sanitation and limited access to clean drinking water.
If left untreated, typhoid can lead to severe complications and, in some cases, can be fatal. Although it is treatable with antibiotics, the best way to protect yourself while travelling is through vaccination.
Symptoms of Typhoid Fever
The symptoms of typhoid fever can range from mild to severe and can develop gradually over a period of weeks. Common symptoms include:
- Headaches
- Increasingly high temperature (fever)
- Fatigue and weakness
- Coughing
- Constipation
As the infection progresses, more severe symptoms may occur, such as:
- Loss of appetite
- Nausea
- Diarrhoea
Without proper treatment, the symptoms of typhoid fever can worsen, leading to severe complications or even death. In fact, about 1 in 5 people who contract typhoid and do not receive timely treatment may die from the infection. Even if individuals survive, some may face long-term complications from the infection.
Where is Typhoid Fever Most Common?

Typhoid fever is prevalent in areas with poor sanitation, particularly in parts of the world such as:
- The Indian subcontinent
- Africa
- South America
- South and Southeast Asia
Travellers visiting these regions are at an increased risk, especially with certain strains of typhoid bacteria becoming resistant to common antibiotics.
