    Why Get the MMR Vaccine?

The MMR vaccine provides long-term protection against three contagious viral diseases: measles, mumps, and rubella. These infections can spread easily and lead to serious health complications, including meningitis, pneumonia, blindness, and birth defects if contracted during pregnancy.

By getting vaccinated, you’re not only protecting yourself but also helping to shield those around you, particularly vulnerable individuals who cannot be vaccinated, such as newborns or those with weakened immune systems.

    What is Measles?

Measles is a highly contagious and potentially serious viral infection. It spreads through the droplets released when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or even breathes. While measles may initially seem like a common cold, it can lead to severe complications, including pneumonia, meningitis, blindness, and seizures. Common symptoms resemble those of a cold, such as coughing and sneezing. However, measles also presents distinctive signs, including small spots inside the mouth and a characteristic rash that appears on the skin. What is Mumps?

Mumps is a contagious viral infection, commonly affecting children who have not yet received the MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine. The condition is characterised by painful swelling on one or both sides of the face, just below the ears, along with symptoms such as headaches, joint pain, and a high fever. While mumps is typically not a severe illness, its symptoms can resemble those of more serious conditions, such as tonsillitis. It’s important to seek medical advice if you suspect mumps to ensure proper diagnosis and care.

    What is Rubella?

Rubella, also known as German measles, is a rare viral illness that typically causes a spotty rash, which usually improves within a week. However, if you are pregnant, rubella can pose serious risks. The rash typically appears 2-3 weeks after exposure to the virus, and additional symptoms can include sore, red eyes, coughing, and headaches. To view photos of the rash, please click here.

If contracted during early pregnancy, rubella can lead to a miscarriage or result in severe complications for the baby, such as vision and hearing impairments, and issues with the heart or brain. Therefore, it’s crucial to avoid exposure during pregnancy and ensure immunisation is up to date.

Who Should Have the MMR Vaccine?

The MMR vaccine is strongly recommended for all babies and young children to protect against measles, mumps, and rubella. However, it’s equally important for certain groups to ensure they’ve had both doses of the vaccine, including:

    • Individuals about to start college or university
    • Those planning to travel abroad to areas where these diseases are more common
    • Women who are planning a pregnancy
    • Frontline health or social care workers
    • People born between 1970 and 1979, as they may have only been vaccinated against measles
    • Individuals born between 1980 and 1990, as they may not be fully protected against mumps

It’s important to note that if you are pregnant, have a weakened immune system, or have had an allergic reaction to any vaccine, you should not receive the MMR vaccine. Always consult with a healthcare professional for personalised advice.

    FAQs

Where is at risk of measles?

Measles is prevalent in many parts of Asia, Africa, the Indian subcontinent, and South America. Recently, there have also been outbreaks in developed countries such as Australia, the US, Canada, New Zealand, and several European nations, including the UK. For specific country recommendations, please refer to Travel Health Pro.

What are the side effects of the MMR vaccine?

Common side effects of the MMR vaccine include:

    • A raised, blotchy rash (similar to a measles rash), feeling unwell, and a high temperature around 7 to 11 days after vaccination.
    • Swollen glands around the cheeks, neck, and jaw, and aching joints (similar to a mild form of mumps) around 2 to 3 weeks after the vaccine.

These side effects are usually mild and typically last just a couple of days.

How effective is the MMR vaccine?

The MMR vaccine provides long-term protection once both doses have been administered. Around 99% of people will be protected against measles and rubella, and 88% will be protected against mumps.

When will I be protected after the MMR vaccine?

Protection begins approximately two weeks after receiving the MMR vaccine. If you are getting the vaccine for travel purposes, it’s recommended to have your second dose at least two weeks before your departure.
