What is Saxenda?
Saxenda is an injection that can be used alongside diet and exercise to help aid weight loss. It contains the medicine liraglutide.
The drug can be prescribed for people with a body mass index (BMI) over 30. It can also be used for people with a BMI over 27 who have also been diagnosed with weight-related medical problems. These include:
- Pre-diabetes and diabetes type 2
- Hypertension (high blood pressure)
- High cholesterol
- Obstructive sleep apnoea
The Saxenda pen is a registered trademark of Novo Nordisk.
Is Saxenda for me?
Saxenda should only be used by patients who have been unsuccessful at losing weight through diet and exercise alone. Saxenda is not suitable for all patients so it is important to answer the questions during your initial consultation honestly. You should not use Saxenda if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant.
Our free consultation is a great opportunity to ask our pharmacist any questions you have about using Saxenda.
How does the service work?
You will start with a free initial face-to-face consultation with your local pharmacist to ensure you are suitable for the service and provide you with all the information you need to get started with Saxenda.
If you are eligible the pharmacist will supply you with one months supply of Saxenda pens and an information pack for you to take home. You will be shown how to use the injection device and manage side effects, we can also answer any questions you have about taking the medicine. Your dose is gradually increased during the first month. During your escalation period the pharmacist will provide you with support, advice and encouragement to help you stay on track. After your first month you will receive a face-to-face consultation with the pharmacist and you will be supplied with your next months worth of Saxenda.
How much does the service cost?
The service costs £260 per month which includes the cost of your consultations plus your Saxenda pens, needles and sharps bins for that month. After 12 weeks of treatment you will receive a progress evaluation with the pharmacist to ensure the service is right for you.
