    What is Pneumonia?

Pneumonia is an infection that causes inflammation in the lungs, often resulting in symptoms like shortness of breath, and a persistent cough. While many people recover within 2-4 weeks with antibiotics, for some individuals—such as babies, young children, people over 65, or those with heart or lung conditions—pneumonia can be much more serious, requiring hospitalisation.

    Common symptoms of pneumonia include:

    • Fatigue and weakness
    • Fever
    • Loss of appetite
    • Persistent cough
    • Shortness of breath

    Causes of Pneumonia

Pneumonia can be caused by either a bacterial or viral infection.

It can be contracted from another person, or it may occur following illnesses such as COVID-19, RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus), or the flu. Pneumonia can also result from food or water entering the lungs or from a fungal infection, however this is rare.

The pneumonia vaccine helps to protect against some of the most common bacterial infections that lead to pneumonia, as well as serious complications like sepsis and meningitis.

Who Should Get the Pneumonia Vaccine?

The following groups are advised to get vaccinated against pneumococcal infections:

    • Babies: Babies receive the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) as part of their childhood vaccination programme.
    • People aged 65 and over: Older adults are at higher risk of developing severe pneumonia.
    • Anyone aged 2-64 with a health condition: Individuals with chronic health conditions, such as heart disease or lung disease, may be at greater risk for pneumonia.
    • People at occupational risk: Workers in jobs that involve exposure to respiratory hazards, such as welders, should consider the vaccine.

    FAQs

How effective is the pneumonia vaccine?

The pneumonia vaccine is highly effective in reducing the risk of serious pneumonia and its complications. While it is the best form of protection, there is still a small chance you could develop pneumonia.

Most adults need only one vaccine for long-lasting protection, while babies require two doses.

You should start to have some protection about three weeks after receiving the vaccine.

What are the side effects of the pneumonia vaccine?

Like all medications, the pneumonia vaccine can cause some side effects, though they are usually mild. Common side effects include:

    • Pain or swelling at the injection site
    • Fever
    • Fatigue
    • Loss of appetite

These side effects are typically temporary. If you have concerns or experience any unusual symptoms, feel free to speak with one of our pharmacists.
